I stopped using hangouts for messaging ages ago because messages were either taking forever to come through or not at all. Video messaging has never worked properly. I literally just wiped this horrible app clean from my phone, and couldnt be happier…. I like messenger, and even hangouts for sms, but whenever I want to delete a bunch of sms, while keeping others in a conversation, I have to download handcent. Hangouts is slow and every time I go to create a new message, it pulls up all kinds of different contacts from who knows where. I could use messenger instead and it would only search thru my personal contacts, those with actual mobile numbers listed only, and it would be great, except, that people would get a message from my carrier number instead of my Google Voice number which is the only one I give to people. I just want to be able to limit Hangouts to searching through only my personal phone contacts that actually have a mobile number listed. I was bouncing just today between Hangouts and Whatsapp, and noting that every single thing that aggravated me about Hangouts was seamless, fast, light, and perfectly integrated on WA. Messenger is a mess for MMS and Group Messaging on my Note 4. I want to like it… I really do. But it just fails over and over again. Pure click bait, shame on Droid life. Ill switch when you include the feature that you have in Hangouts but not in Messenger.

WHY IS THIS LEFT OUT IN MESSENGER! You clearly have two apps that can attach pictures, or send photo. But someone decided ahhhh lets stop there…. ADD IT INTO MESSENGERBizarre.

I stopped using messenger 2 months ago when i sent a picture and it was so distorted and compressed i couldnt even see it, let alone the person i sent it to. Maybe if its fixed ill go back to it. So I switched back to Hangouts. I should be able to set it in preferences to ALWAYS be an enter key not that stupid ass emoticon key. Messenger is so much better for default SMS. I have a g3 on sprint.

Love the app but, I have to do group messaging for work and it never works on google messenger. I love textra (just paid to go pro) and it has quick replies, wear support, photo capture group texting and so much more! Textra has been my go to for a couple months, I was using hoverchat for a while because I liked the chat bubble concept but I found it way lacking in comparision to textra.

Messenger is just something that replaces the default texting carrier app? This is the main ( and probably only reason) I use Google Hangouts and did the merger. Google is only recommending messenger for Project Fi and not other carriers.

Hangouts works fine (for the most part) for MMS, SMS and group messaging and I use hangouts for this purpose. The whole reason I use hangouts is because of trying to use Google Voice number for everything.

But damn, Google needs to decide what it is gonna do. I use messenger, hangouts, qksms… been trying to find which one is the best…I switched to Textra over the weekend, so far so good. Messenger always seems to be finicky with MMS, which is what prompted the changeI learned this the hard way months ago, Google. Group messages were a total nightmare and would hardly ever load in Hangouts.

Once I switched, they magically worked again. This means my texts are being sent out of my carrier number, which nobody knows (and I want to keep it that way. Everyone I know in this country (I use whatsapp with my international friends) is not going to switch to that from imessage just to talk to me. If it just a handful of people, have them install hangouts and then you can text over wifi. Just chalk it up to Apple being Apple. Although to be fair. When I was overseas I just used hangouts and skype over wifi and my mom used hangouts when she was in France. Ironically nobody I know uses whatsapp.

I also want to love hangouts and have it do everything seamlessly and flawlessly, but it does have its drawbacks and gives me a bit of frustration once in a while. How about this for what they are really saying. If I could figure out how to reliably have Google Voice SMS route to the messenger app I would literally have that steaming pile of garbage hangouts disabled on my phone. It needs completely redone from scratch.

Nothing looks right, nor works right. I want a serious competitor to iMessage on Android. Unfortunately, to use Messenger, I have to decouple Voicemail from Hangouts as well. I use my Google Voice number as my Voicemail forwarding service.

I never really got into Hangouts. I kept trying but it just never did it for me. The only time I ever use it is for live, real time conversations as needed.

I never get this, friend texts me again and finally get it. Today: What time are we watching the movie? But what I read is: Wanna go to watching the movie? My group messages are also hit or miss with messenger. Tested it with a friend on Verizon and he was getting the same MMS failed to download or MMS failed to send. I got my T-Mobile Nexus 6 on day one and was having the same problems.

None of it helped, so they sent me a replacement Nexus 6. I use Hangouts for video chat as a replacement for Skype. I have never seen it as or used it for anything more than that. Jack of all trades and master of none. I need to step back and think what works best for google. I tried Google Messenger.

I decided to try it out after the last update, hangouts was taking hours to receive texts and throwing in weird characters after my Lollipop OTA on my G3. Messenger works pretty well and is more visually appealing than stock. To bad messenger only works half the time. Meaning only about half on the messages I receive get sent to my 360. Decided to try it out again last week because of the update. My Dad got an LG G3. Google Voice itself provides a very useful thing if you need it, but I think in a lot of cases not many people will need it. I actually really like the messenger app. It makes the app look a lot less boring.

Messenger is cool but I rarely use sms anymore. The people I text the most (wife with an iPhone 6 and sister with a Note 3 and nephew with a Nexus 7 WiFi) all use instant messaging with Hangouts.

Unless youre using Project Fi as your wireless carrier, this (misleading) article has nothing to do with you. So chances are its really only as confusing as it was before this article made it appear worse. Once again pushing crap nobody wants or needs. This all should have been integrated into 1 app, whether it be hangouts, messenger, voice, or whatever flavor of the moment they are bloating our devices with.
